Squash your bento box, but wait until it’s empty of course.

シリコン折り畳みランチボックス S

The collapsible lunchbox. I like the color, and the fact that it’s made of silicone. Do you think it would protect the Bento well enough?

And yes, it comes in Single or Double.

For a truly ordinary lunch-eater like me, this would absolutely suffice, and take up less room in my bag, but I’d love to hear thoughts from Bento artists?

Oh Mickey, you’re so fine-in my Bento

Today, I came across a Mickey Mouse motherlode for Bento fans who also love their Mickey.

First, bake yourself a Mickey Cake.

Mickey Bread, anyone?

カナッペモールドミッキー

Mickey Pancakes? Oh yeah.

My personal favorite-the Sitting Mickey Cookie Kit.

Mickey sauce bottles.

And Mickey molds of all kinds.

I confess, these disembodied parts of Mickey are a bit troublesome to me.

The Mickey Rice mold, however, I do like.

There are Mickey containers, for your condiments.

And of course, a Mickeypalooza with some parts I can’t identify. Clues, anyone?

We’ve never really gone the Disney route in our house, but with these in our kitchen? I might be swayed.

Trailer for Sarah Vowell’s new book serves up some gorgeous Food Art

I never knew a book could have a trailer, but now, I’m thinking it’s the way to go. It certainly got me inspired to look at a book that, to be honest, might not have sparked my interest otherwise. Food artist Sakurako Kitsa created an amazing series of food art pieces for  Sarah Vowell’s new book Unfamiliar Fishes. Beautiful, aren’t they?

These little lambs make me think of Spring

Sadly, one thing I learned on my Japan trip is that for many of these companies, the U.S. market is both too complicated, and seemingly unapproachable. Never fear, friends. Your intrepid buyers at Japanistic aim to change that! Stay tuned…

Double-Decker Bus Bento

【nico hrat/ニコフラート】ロンドンバス トリオセット

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for the Japanese affection for Europe, and the way products with British or French themes look when given a Japanese twist. These London Plates, bowls, mugs, and more, are no exception.

And the double-decker bus theme? Awesome. From Nicohrat, with accessories galore. (Yes, I’ll do my best to find it for Japanistic.)

Surprisingly, no chopsticks. But nevertheless, I’d pack my son’s lunch in any of these.

Russian Bento raises, or way, way, WAY lowers the art form.

There is certainly a kind of artistry in this Russian Bento. (via)

Maybe I shouldn’t say I am laughing, but I have to admit to busting a gut looking at these. And I also admit, were I to finally try my hand at Bento art, mine would probably look something like these.

The fish head and tail make this country maiden just exceptional.

Don't they know that raisins look like....

Medusa, the Bento Queen!

What could this possibly be? Can you guess? A meat ship? "On the good ship, meat and bacon..."

This reminds me of one of those tree creatures from Lord of the Rings.

I visited Russia 25 years ago, and never need to eat Dill again! Plus, this one actually says "For My Father." Wrong!!

Not bad, relative to some of the others, right?

These just seem rude.

Sadness, personified.

This chicken has been violated.

"For my husband on St. Valentine's Day." Um, what? A male anatomy component with teeth? Or, is this an alien that has burst from her stomach?

The message here? Watch out bento artists. There is a fierce throw-down coming your way. Bento Cakewrecks, here we come.

How much Bento can I be jealous of in one sitting?

As you know, I am in awe of Bento artists. Cookpad includes photos from an almost endless number of bento fans.

Yes, there are the basics – Totoro, Hello Kitty and others, but so much more. Bunnies, Pandas, Hearts, Stars, and just about any bento image you can imagine.

Cuteness reigns, of course, and I think it would be an amazing source of inspiration for you bento artists out there. For example, seaweed patterns that are surely worth a try.

Hunt around enough, and you can get directions too, in Japanese of course.

As inspired as I am by the directions, for me it’s really all about the pretty pictures.

Sumo Boy Bento

Can’t resist some cuteness today. Sumo Boy Bento.

Look at that upside down heart nose, and the impish grin. I’d get in the ring with this guy any day.

Transform your Bento

For the sake of my son, I had to post this. Tough and cute. Optimus Prime Bento.
