Squash your bento box, but wait until it’s empty of course.

シリコン折り畳みランチボックス S

The collapsible lunchbox. I like the color, and the fact that it’s made of silicone. Do you think it would protect the Bento well enough?

And yes, it comes in Single or Double.

For a truly ordinary lunch-eater like me, this would absolutely suffice, and take up less room in my bag, but I’d love to hear thoughts from Bento artists?

Oh Mickey, you’re so fine-in my Bento

Today, I came across a Mickey Mouse motherlode for Bento fans who also love their Mickey.

First, bake yourself a Mickey Cake.

Mickey Bread, anyone?

カナッペモールドミッキー

Mickey Pancakes? Oh yeah.

My personal favorite-the Sitting Mickey Cookie Kit.

Mickey sauce bottles.

And Mickey molds of all kinds.

I confess, these disembodied parts of Mickey are a bit troublesome to me.

The Mickey Rice mold, however, I do like.

There are Mickey containers, for your condiments.

And of course, a Mickeypalooza with some parts I can’t identify. Clues, anyone?

We’ve never really gone the Disney route in our house, but with these in our kitchen? I might be swayed.

Yes, Papabubble, I would like some candy, please.

Somehow, right now, with all the sadness, I am craving candy. Artisanal caramel is not something I had considered before today, and yet, I want to go to this candy shop in Tokyo something awful.

According to Designboom, which featured this loveliness in a recent post “in his design of the interior for a new papabubble candyshop in shibuya, tokyo, japanese architect yusuke seki sought to create a dynamic retail and exhibition space that would mirror the constant activity and changing atmosphere of the store.

the papabubble storefronts not only sell handmade candy but also serve as exhibition spaces for its production. with a kitchen largely open to the rest of the store, the shops invite visitors to watch the ‘caramel artisans’ at work
creating candy flowers, jewelry, or tiny fruit slices.

Candy cuteness on the spot? Yes, please.

Candy Stretching. Who doesn’t want that job?

I wish they’d run classes for would-be candy makers like me. Yet another reason to get to Tokyo one of these days.

I like to start my day with a bit of lucky

Lucky Cats, of course. What better for drinking your coffee or tea than either of these two Mugs?

Show your kitty love with this Lucky Cat Mug.

Maneki Neko Tea Mug. Keeps your tea warm and cozy.

Brand your baked goods.

I wish I baked so I could use these awesome tools. Decorate your steamed buns or eggs or cookies with these, well, I guess they are stamps of sorts. More like brands, except there are no cows involved. (via)

Florals, SQUIRRELS, Birds, that remind me of the wood-burning kit I just got for my son and I to make crafty goods for the family. Except these crafty goods are edible!

How to get these here? No real idea. Any tips from our fans?

Sadly, one thing I learned on my Japan trip is that for many of these companies, the U.S. market is both too complicated, and seemingly unapproachable. Never fear, friends. Your intrepid buyers at Japanistic aim to change that! Stay tuned…

How much Bento can I be jealous of in one sitting?

As you know, I am in awe of Bento artists. Cookpad includes photos from an almost endless number of bento fans.

Yes, there are the basics – Totoro, Hello Kitty and others, but so much more. Bunnies, Pandas, Hearts, Stars, and just about any bento image you can imagine.

Cuteness reigns, of course, and I think it would be an amazing source of inspiration for you bento artists out there. For example, seaweed patterns that are surely worth a try.

Hunt around enough, and you can get directions too, in Japanese of course.

As inspired as I am by the directions, for me it’s really all about the pretty pictures.

Local eats, if Japan is local for you.

A new favorite blog. Tokyo Bura Bura. Restaurants in Japan. Just restaurants, with little text. It’s the photos that get you.

It’s hard to explain why I like it but I think it’s because the restaurants all look like the small, local ones you’d walk by as a tourist.

It’s the restaurants I wish I had been able to find when in Japan. The ones guaranteed to have the best food, and that you want to have a friend introduce you to.

Next trip, I promise myself more of these places.

Sumo Boy Bento

Can’t resist some cuteness today. Sumo Boy Bento.

Look at that upside down heart nose, and the impish grin. I’d get in the ring with this guy any day.

A Panda good enough to eat

If this isn’t the definition of Kawaii, I don’t know what is. Panda Bread. (via)

At Perfect Pandas (but really, is there any other kind), you can get the recipe and perhaps open your own Panda Patisserie. That is, if you are a better baker than I.

At the original Japanese site, Taro Taro, bakers submit their own Panda Bread creations.

Some are clearly better than others. And do I see a Snoopy in there? Whatever the baker’s skill level, in my book, they are all positively precious Panda perfection just waiting to be gobbled.
