Samurai Duke it Out for Asia Week

March 14th, 2009 · No Comments

The New York Times has a good synopsis on what is happening for Asia Week. In case you don’t know about it, Asia Week:

begins on Saturday in New York, is like a marathon, requiring agility, stamina and focus. Unlike Art Basel, Asia Week has no promoter organizing the activities; they are mostly dealer-driven. And while most of the art dates before 1900, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t surprising and fresh.

This year’s events include auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Bonham’s (49 Japanese screens from the estate of the dealer Liza Hyde) and Doyle; an art fair (Arts of Pacific Asia); and at least 20 gallery exhibitions, some organized by European specialists.

The six dealers in JADA, the Japanese Art Dealers Association, have organized a three-day exhibition of Japanese art at the Ukrainian Institute, 2 East 79th Street, Manhattan, from Sunday through Tuesday.

Here, instead of booths, the dealers have combined their paintings, sculptures and ceramics in one museumlike setting.
